Purpose
We sought to build a web-based knowledge resource for differential diagnosis in neuroradiology and tomake that knowledge available through an interactive web site for education and clinical decision support.
Methods and Materials
"Gamut"means differential diagnosis in radiology; meaning a list of conditions that can cause a given radiological finding.
Neuroradiology comprises a vast array of diseases and their corresponding radiological manifestations.
We created a relational database of neurological diseases (such as “Craniopharyngioma”) and imaging findings (such as “Erosion of sphenoid wing”). The database defined a knowledge model of disease entities,
imaging findings,
synonyms,
and hierarchical relationships between terms.
In our Gamuts,
we defined relationships to link the ontology's terms in the following ways -
Causality
The causes...
Results
Our database includes an interactive web-based resource of differential-diagnosis listings ("gamuts") in the domain of neuroradiology. This neuroradiology gamut database comprises differential-diagnosis listings for 177 imaging observations.
In our knowledge model (ontology),
we specified all of the concepts as subclasses of a single class,
"Entity",
and defined relationships between terms. The database incorporates 3,642 terms for disorders and imaging findings,
which are linked by 8,377 relationships. Our Radiology Gamut Ontology's concepts were annotated with RadLex® concepts and SNOMED Clinical Terms® to allow interoperability with other ontologies.
The gamuts...
Conclusion
The “Neuroradiology Gamuts” database offers an interactive resource for differential diagnosis in neuroradiology. It forms part of a comprehensive knowledge resource being developed for education and diagnostic decision support in radiology.
