Learning objectives
- to propose a simple checklist to review chest X-ray and avoid the main pitfalls.
- to improve the understanding of chest X-ray findings by comparison with CT scan appareances .
- to increase self confidence of junior radiologists in detecting subtle abnormalities .
Background
Although the role of chest X-ray has shifted consequently to the development of CT scan,
it remains a major screening tool for a range of thoracic pathologies.
However junior radiologists are less and less confident in reporting X rays and teaching of abnormal radiographic findings is decreasing for the benefit of CT scan or MRI learning .
Regular correlation of chest XRays with CT scan appearances is not only a powerful educational tool but also an efficient self teaching technic,
to be used on regular...
Findings and procedure details
Many systematic approaches of chest Xray interpretation are proposed in the literature,
and most radiologists choose and adopt one.
They are so many elements and superimpositions of structures on a chest Xray that we believe those routine reviews are useful even for the more experienced radiologists: missing a rib lesion or an apical mass can easily happen in the high volume clinical imaging environment most radiologoists live in nowadays.
We chose simplified check-lists both for chest XRay and CTscan reporting,
and applied them systematically to...
Conclusion
Improving performances of chest X ray reporting by junior or non specialized radiologists is crucial.
Nowadays,
arguably,
chest X ray is mainly used as a screening tool.
Unless the clinical context is straightforward and the appearances are in keeping with a typical infectious pneumonia or a cardiogenic pulmonary oedema,
when abnormal findings are discovered on CXR,
a CT scan of the chest is prescribed.
A systematic approach of CXR review helps to avoid the classical traps of easy-to-miss lesions lying in the apices,
below the...
