Learning objectives
To describe the technique of magnetic resonancedefecography.
To describe and depict the magnetic resonance signs of obstructive defecography.
Background
MRI defecography is a valuable tool for showing signs of obstructed defecation.
It is indicated for patient who have difficulty or with prolonged time defecation as well as those with constipation.
defecatory dysfunction represent a common health problem,
especially in women.(1)(2)
Findings and procedure details
TECHNIQUE and METHODS:
Imaging of the anorectum involves static and dynamic images
The procedure is performed following 150-200 cc of sonographic gel administrated per rectum.(Fig1).
Static images inculde high resolution axial and coronal T2WI with and without fat-suppression of the anal canal.
Static images are obtained to exclude perianal fistulas,
sinus tracts and anal sphincter defects which might cause pain during defecation.
Functionalimages include mid sagittal dynamic steady state free precision obtained at rest,
squeeze and evacuation.(Fig 2).
It should depict the anotectum,
coccyx and...
Conclusion
We presented the indication,
technique of MR defecography and showed the relative signs encountered in obstructive defecography.
