To evaluate the trainees,
we started by asking for a subjective evaluation of supervisors,
then in 2007/2008 we created a objetive paper-based form with 87 criteria evaluated on a scale of 6 categories ("Poor",
"Adequate",
" Adequate +",
"Good "" Very Good "," Excellent ") and divided into 13 domains.
The tool was heavily criticized for being difficult to fill out and too exhaustive.
In the 2011/2012 school year,
the paper form was re-created to contain 34 criteria evaluated on a scale of 4 categories ("Poor"; "Adequate"; "Good"; "Very Good") divided into 3 evaluation domains.
There are some criteria,
that because of their importance,
are classified as “core criteria”,
therefore every studens that is assess as “Poor” is automatically disaproved in the clinical internship.
Acceptance of the assessment tool was increased.
Currently recurring to Google sites,
we have developed a multi-profiled site,
based on user authentication permissions,
where the supervisor can consult information regarding the place of internship and trainees,
and fill out trainee's individual assessments.
The specific evaluation form with the criteria (adapted from the last paper-based version) is provided for all supervisors based on their permissions profile.
The form is divided into 5 subforms: the first identifies the student,
the supervisor and the date of the assessement; the second regards the assessment of the criteria in the Cognition domain,
the third assess the criteria in the Psychomotor domain; the fourth is about the Affective/Attitudes domain; the last one is for the supervisor to make relevant observations about the learning curve of the trainee.
All the responses of the forms are collect in a Google Spreadsheet,
and a formula automatically calculates the grade.
To give a grade feedback to the external supervisor,
we build a link (available on the bottom of the form page) for each student,
that display’s the Google Spreadsheet as an HTML table page.
To show up only the information of a trainee,
we use Google Visualization API to make a query of only the rows that are needed.
The supervisors from the university as administrators can consult and compile all of the information available in a daily basis.
