Aims and objectives
Breast Cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignant disease and the leading reason of cancer death among women from 20 to 59 years of ages and the second leading cause of death for women aged 60 and more.
Firstly it starts as a local disease,
but it can disseminate to lymph nodes and distant organs as metastases,
which are the main cause of death among these patients.
This study aimed to explore the prevalence of metastasis of breast cancer and to identify the organ systems,...
Methods and materials
This retrospective cohort study included all patients who were diagnosed with breast cancer in the National Center of Oncology named after V.A.Fanarjian,
Armenia from 2012 to 2016.
The data were collected from the electronic database and patients’ medical records.
Descriptive analysis was conducted to determine characteristics of the patients and describe the study population.
Results
Overall 5549 patients were diagnosed with breast cancer from 2012 to 2016.
The incidence rate of breast cancer increased from 66.5 in 2012 to 77.2 in 2014 and decreased again to 62.7 in 2016 out of 100000 populations.
The main target organs of breast cancer metastases are lungs,
liver and bones.
The prevalence of lung metastasis decreased from 46 to 27 from 2012 to 2016 and liver metastasis decreased from 19 in 2012 to 15 in 2016 accordingly,
meanwhile there was not detected significant decrease...
Conclusion
At 5-year follow-up,
significant differences were observed in the diagnosis of breast cancer and the risk of developing breast cancer metastasis,
which may be as a result of better preventive screenings of breast cancer and starting the treatment earlier,
which prevents its further dissemination.
Further research is needed to fully understand the disease progression and disclose in which method (CT,
MRI,
PET-CT etc.) it was diagnosis.
