Aims and objectives
Fibroepithelial tumors (FET) represent a heterogeneous lesion group,
diagnosed by core needle biopsy (CNB),
composed of an epithelial and stromal component and include fibroadenomas (FA) and phyllodes tumors (PT) [1-3].
The majority of FET are fibroadenoma,
the most common benign breast tumor in teen girls and young women with a peak incidence during the second and third decades of life [4].
FA will require a follow-up imaging or only conservative management.
Phyllodes tumors (PT) are rare,
representing 2-3% of FET,
often benign,
occur most frequently...
Methods and materials
Patients and lesions
Our prospective study included a series of 151 patients who consulted at Pierre and Marie Curie Anti Oncology Center,
between January 2016 and September 2017.
Among these patients,
187 breast lesions detected by B-mode US were analyzed with strain elastography and color Doppler US.
The exclusion criteria were patients with a personal history of breast cancer and patients under radiotherapy or neoadjuvant chemotherapy for neighboring lesions.
B-mode Ultrasound
All sonographic examinations were performed by using ultrasound machine systems equipped with a 13-6...
Results
One hundred and eighty-seven masses were included in our study.
There were 31 phyllodes tumors (29 benign,
2 borderlines) and 156 fibroadenomas (121 with Mildly cellular stroma,
35 with moderate cellular stroma) (Fig.
6).
Clinical
The average age of patients was 39.04 years (Interquartile range [IQR],
16-78 years) for FA and 37.19 years (IQR,
16-59 years) for PT (P = 0.481).
The masses were more often palpable in the PT (18/31) than in the FA (38/156) (P < 0.001).
B-mode Ultrasound
The B-mode ultrasound characteristics...
Conclusion
Strain elastography can provide additional information to differentiate PT from FA and has a high potential for improving specificity.
Strain elastography and color Doppler US characteristics were significantly different between FA and PT.
FA have a tendency to have less stiffness and lower vascularity than PT.
The combined use of strain elastography and US color Doppler US with B-mode ultrasound improved diagnostic performance with increased specificity in distinguishing FA from PT.
This study suggests that the combined use of Strain Elastography and color Doppler US...
