Background

On moving to new high sensitivity wireless digital radiography cassettes, multiple low contrast rectangular shaped image artefacts have been found in AP chest radiographs especially in patients of larger body habitus where high kVPs were utilised.

Collimation of the image can reduce how conspicuous these artefacts appear but collimation is not always possible on large patients. An e-mail directive from the detector supplier suggested the addition of an optional lead backing sheet to reduce artifacts. We endeavoured to create a method to identify the cause of such artifacts and to test the effectiveness of the optional lead backing to remove the pre-described artefacts.
