Learning objectives

This educational poster is to display the findings in our patients presenting with unprovoked thromboembolism

Background

Unprovoked venous thromboembolism is increasingly seen on imaging studies either due to increase in the incidence or because of the high quality of the modern scanners. How far and how many investigations are needed in patients with unprovoked VTE is an ongoing clinical dilemma. Unprovoked VTE can be initial presentation of underlying cancer { in the absence of other causes} or secondary to benign conditions or infective process { such as Tuberculosis} Patients with the following are at higher risk or developing VTE or presenting...

Findings and procedure details

Whilst severalstudies showed low occurrence of unprovoked VTE {around 4 %}, we found it to be around 6 %. While it is still a low yield, the clinical team found it useful for short and long term management of their patients, to reduce stress for patients awaiting results and follow up. Some of the patients may be lost in the waiting lists or might forget to attend their clinics The pathway we follow in our cohort of patients, included 1. Haematological work up 2. CT...

Conclusion

We conclude that an early CT of the Chest, Abdomen and pelvis evaluation of unprovoked VTE helps the clinicians, reduces the stress amongst patients, and reduces the problems of delayed investigations and its implications
