Aims and objectives
The aim of the study is to search the sonographic results of young males with breast lumps and their differences between young adulthood and adolescence.
Breast masses are among the reasons for admission to the hospital in young men.
In the adolescence period,
ultrasonographic findings compatible with gynecomastia are frequently encountered.
Ultrasonographic findings of adolecents show differences according to adolecent turnover.
Investigating changes in ultrasonographic findings with age in breast lesions in young men will contribute to a better understanding of the aetiology of breast...
Methods and materials
All of the breast ultrasound imagings between January 2014 and October 2017 were reviewed and male patients below and in 20 years old and between 21 and 35 years were recorded.
All lesions were classified as normal male breast appearance,
unilateral gynecomastia,
bilateral gynecomastia,
increased subcutaneous adipose tissue,
lipomas,
suspicious lesion and other benign findings as infection.
Results
Two hundred-eight young male and 137 adolescent formed the study group.
A hundred twenty-five of the 208 patients (60%; %41.8 bilateral,
%18.2unilateral) in the young adults and 105 of the 137(77,6%; %50.3 bilateral,
%26.3 unilateral) of the adolescents had gynecomastia.
The second most common pathology was pseudo-gynecomastia with increased adipose tissue; 17% of young adults and,
12% for adolescents.
Lipoma was the cause of the lump for three patients at young adults whereas we didn’t see lipoma as the cause of the lump at adolescents....
Conclusion
Gynecomatia was more common in adolescents-mostly bilateral- and these can be due to the temporary gynecomastia of adolescence.
We think that this is due to the hormonal increase in adolescents.
In young adulthood we saw that pseudo gynecomastia is a more frequent problem than adolescents.
