Conclusion

The hand dose of interventional radiologists performing catheterization can be substantially reduced with the use of a non-lead femoral entry shield. Being lead-free and composed of C, Sb and Bi, the shield’s main shield shielding effect is due to the constituent element Sb. The physical quantity mass attenuation coefficient, µ/ρ, of the bilayer shield is comparable to lead at the same IR x-ray energy and may be as an alternate physical quantity to specify the shielding property of a radiation protection equipment.

The shield can also be disposed of safely without hazard to the environment.
