Learning objectives
- Solitary dilated duct (SDD) visualized by mammography is a rare event.
- The correlation with ultrasound (US) second look may present: ductal ectasia with homogeneous or heterogeneous content,
being papilloma the main finding in heterogeneous images.
- When related to carcinoma usually comes from associated finding,
not being the main finding of mammography.
Background
Mammography is proved to be the unique exam that can reduce breast cancer mortality.
Mammography is recommended exam to women over 40 years old and should be done annually for screening and,
when women present any symptoms - palpable mass,
hemorrhages discharge or inflammatory signals - the diagnostic mammography should be performed.
The correct mammographic interpretation and the valorization of some aspects allow reduce false negative or false positive results in order to reduce women anxiety.

Findings and procedure details
The evaluation of 103 mammographies where solitary dilated duct were identifying had the second look ultrasound performed to confirm the presence of SDD and evaluating the intraductal content.
Follow up,
some of that with heterogeneous content had anatomopathological study performed by core biopsy US-guided or surgery.
Case 1 - FALSE POSITIVE MAMMOGRAPHY (Fig.1)
Ocasionally,
solitary dilated duct visualized by mammography can not be confirmed by US second look.
Prior surgery or other mammary parenchyma changes can mimetize a solitary dilated duct at mammography.
CLINICAL FEATURES:...
Conclusion
The awareness of possible imaging findings related to the solitary dilated duct,
visualized by mammography and correlated with US and anatomopathological findings is important for a better understanding of associated lesions and their possible differential diagnoses,
which may evitate unnecessary percutaneous biopsies.
