Findings and procedure details
We performed a thorough literature research and gathered all relevant aspects and restrictions regarding MR safety of hearing implants from the four leading vendors Med-El,
Cochlear,
Advanced Bionics,
and Oticon.
We then summarized these restrictions and filtered the "least commom denominator" and integrated them to an standard procedure algorithm applicable to the majority of all available hearing implants.
We present a standardized and save algorithm for feasible MR examinations in patients with hearing implants:
Before MR appointment
MR examination at least 6 months after implantation
Thorough review of clinical indication of MR scan
Transferring partner has to provide accurate details of implant type,
serial no.
and implant date BEFORE making appointment
Approval of MR exam with specific hearing implant by responsible radiologist
Specific informed consent of the patient for possible complications (magnet dislocation and revision operation in local anaesthesia,
pain,
hearing sensations)
General precautions and restrictions
MR exam only @ 1.5 T MR machine
Removal of external devices (sound processor etc.)
Head bandage with additional flat plastic splint over magnet
Head positioning:
Straight posture of the head with no further rotation or tilt during entering the MR cabin and patient positioning on the MR table
SAR surveillance and normal operating mode (no 1st level)
