Learning objectives
Do regular information updates help colleagues plan and manage their reporting workload more effectively?
Background
As part of radiology resident training in our locality, trainees have a plain film target for the academic year. Attainment of this target is reviewed annually at the trainee's appraisal.
Targets depend on seniority, subspeciality and working hours. It is desirable to report these films throughout the year rather than in a rapid burst at the end of the year.

Findings and procedure details
11 colleagues working in the same hospital were invited to take part in a small pilot project to assess the benefit of weekly workload progress updates. Participation was voluntary.
Weekly e-mail updates detailing individual reporting figures were then sent to all interested registrar colleagues. The e-mail listed progress against yearly target with number of films required per week to achieve their appraisal requirement. The data for these reports was retrived from the statistics reporting database at off peak hours meaning no additional resource usage on...
Conclusion
This pilot project demonstrates that accurate regular updates of reporting figures can be of great benefit for reporting radiologists in helping plan and complete work. In addition, regular feedback on review of previously reported studies is educationally very useful.
Colleagues highlighted minor concerns about management using this data and these tools as a peformance monitoring tool rather than a productivity incentive aid.
This was a small pilot project. Since the original pilot project the tool has been offered to the radiology registrar body on a...
