Purpose
In recent decades, there has been widespread use of multichannel coils to improve speed, signal and quality of MR imaging.
The purpose of this study was to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate a 64-channel head/neck phase array coil versus 20-channel Head/Neck coil (Figure 1).
Methods and materials
In an intraindividual comparative study,5 volunteers (three women, two men; mean age, 38, range, 36–41 years) with no history of neurological
disease underwent 3 Tesla MRI (SIEMENS Magnetom Skyra) brain scan using a 64-channel head/neck array coil and quantitatively compared to a
20-channel head/neck array coil.
Axial T1, T2-weighted sequences (Table 1) were acquired. Quantitative analysis included signal-to-noise (SNR) and contrast-to-noise (CNR) values were calculated based on signal intensity (SI) measurements of selected regions (Figure 2).
T2-weighted images were used for SNR assessment. Regions of...

Conclusion
Limitations:
Current study is limited by small sample size and only conventional T1 and T2 sequences were being evaluated.Further studies need to further address protocol optimization and the impact on difference sequences such as functional imaging by using 64-channel phase array coil.
3-Tesla MRI with 64-channel phase array coil provides higher SNR and CNR in brain imaging. However, qualitative evaluation did not show significant qualitative improvement.
