Background

Diseases of the peritoneum are commonly seen in medical practice, especially at oncology centers.
They represent a challenge for radiologists, with overlapping imaging appearances.
Peritoneum is a large serous membrane covering 1.8 m². It contains two layers- Visceral & parietal peritoneum with about 50 ml fluid.It develops from mesoderm of trilaminar embryo and contains mesothelial cells, collagen, fibroblasts and elastic tissue. Peritoneum functions as a conduit for blood vessels,lymphatics,nerves. It has absorptive and immunological properties.
Knowledge about the various peritoneal disease patterns is of crucial importance for accurate differential diagnosis.
Peritoneum is a known pathway of disease with its extensive surface area and hosts tumour deposits in recesses and folds. It can be the initial site of disease presentation on imaging.
Anatomical knowledge of peritoneum and knowledge of routes of spread along the peritoneal recesses is important to detect disease & guide management. (Fig-1)
