Purpose
Breast augmentation is the most common plastic surgical procedure. According to the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there were 1,862,506 procedures performed worldwide in 2018. 7727 breast augmentations were performed in UK in 2018.
UK breast screening programme has been implemented since 1988. All women age between 50-70 are offered 3-yearly mammography tests. With increasing popularity of breast augmentation, the number of women attending for breast screening with breast implants in situ is also increasing.

Methods and materials
This was a retrospective study on women with breast implants attending the NHS breast screening programme across Scotland between 1st April 2010 and 31st March 2017.
The number of women screened with and without implants, andthe cancer detection rates within these two groups were available on the national screening report.
Individual records were accessed to record the characteristic of the malignancies detected.
No specific exclusion criteria applied.
Results
There were a total of 1,167,783 screening episodes across Scotland over the 7 year study period. 3797 screening episodes had breast implants in situ (0.3%).
21 women with augmentation were diagnosed with breast cancer, giving a rate of 5.5 per 1000. This is significantly lower compared to the breast cancer detection rate for general population in Scotland (8.4 per 1000) , (p
Conclusion
Based on our results, breast cancer detection rate at screening (5.5 per 1000) is significantly lower in women with breast implants compared to the known cancer detection rate in the rest of the population in Scotland (8.4 per 1000) , p
