Learning objectives
1.Discuss the classification, epidemiology and pathophysiology of Hamartomas.
2.Describe the imaging characteristic of tissue specific hamartomas and mimics
3.Demonstrate the association between multiples Hamartomas and Genetic syndromes
Background
This educational project reviews the classification, epidemiology and pathophysiology of Hamartomas as well as the imaging findings for characterization of tissue specific Hamartomas in chest, abdomen and pelvis. Knowledge of the potential imaging mimickers for tissue specific Hamartomas, is crucial for the radiologist in order to achieve the corresponding diagnosis
Hamartomas are disorganized benign tumor growth composed of different types of mesenchymal cells derived from multilinage mesodermic origin. Hamartomas tissue comprise diverse types of cells including myocytes, chondrocytes, adipocytes, epithelial cells and may be located...
Conclusion
Hamartomas are benign slow growth tumors composed of different types of mesenchymal cells and are frequently seen in association with multiples genetic syndromes. Knowledge of the potential imaging mimickers for tissue specific Hamartomas is crucial for the Radiologist in order to achieve the corresponding diagnosis. Imaging modalities are integral to the clinical work up as it may contribute in the classification, and exclusion of other primary neoplasms.
