Learning objectives
Describe, identify and present the imaging findings, and associated anomalies in the OEIS complex.
Categorize the imaging findings in the OEIS complex by a systemic approach.
Describe the OEIS complex differential diagnosis, given its low incidence.
Background
OEIS complex is a rare disorder comprising a combination of defects of the genitourinary and intestinal tract, including:
Omphalocele.
Bladder/cloacal exstrophy.
Imperforate anus.
Spinal defects.
It is caused by a:
Convergence failure of mesodermal migration.
Developmental failure of the urorectal septum during embryonic life.
Findings and procedure details
Using the search terms: “OEIS complex” “imaging”; 77 publications were obtained.
After eliminating 8 duplicates, and applying the inclusion criteria, 36 publications were preserved and 41 discarded.
A full text critical reading was done on this publications, obtaining information from 281 patients with OEIS complex who had diagnostic imaging studies.
The concepts found in the literature were correlated with the clinical and imaging findings of a representative case from the last year, in the archive of the Central Military Hospital, Bogota- Colombia.
Conclusion
The OEIS complex is a recognized combination of Omphalocele, cloacal Exstrophy, Imperforate anus, and Spinal defects. With an incidence of 1 in 200.000 to 400.000 live births, nonetheless, their real incidence is unknown because many cases are incorrectly diagnosed prenatally, and the majority of these pregnancies are terminated, by the image findingsin prenatallife.
The first step in this patients management is the description and depiction of these anomalies that can be seen in diagnostic imaging, which are the main objectives for this systematic review, because...
