Purpose
Pregnant patients presenting with neurological symptoms have a higher incidence of certain conditions but are also at unique risks from ionising radiation and contrast agents.
Venous sinus thrombosis is a common differential in pregnant patients presenting with headache. Incidence in the general population 3-5/million and accounts for <1% all strokes. Clinical presentation varies but patients classically present with subacute headache worsening over days with 30-40% experiencing seizures 1.
Despite the clinical and medicolegal implications, there is a lack of up-to-date national and local guidelines.
We retrospectively audited our practice in a 6 year period to establish the indications and outcomes in our population with a view to establishing clear local guidelines.
The aims of this audit were:
1.To determine the indications of pregnant patients requiring neurological imaging from 2013-2017 at BSUH trust.
2.To determine the outcomes in these patients. What is the incidence of VST in this population?
3.Review the value added by doing repeat imaging.
4.How closely are guidelines being followed and how justified are the scans?
