Learning objectives
To summarize and illustrate benign lesions of the larynx, pharynx, and other neck structures, recapitulating the clinical and imaging findings of each one.
Background
We reviewed several cases, each one representative of a particular benign and non-urgent entity of laryngo-pharyngeal and neck disease, to show its most relevant clinical and imaging characteristics and facilitate its recognition and proper reporting.
Although benign, these lesions may be harmful to health, in many cases because of the mass effect they can exert, which may be more prominent if the tumor is contained within an enclosed space such as the respiratory tract. Therefore, the investigation of these abnormalities should not be neglected. Moreover,...
Findings and procedure details
The nosological entities included in this essay mostly represent extra-mucosal benign expansile lesions of the neck and are the following: lipoma, lymphangioma, paraganglioma, thyroglossal duct cyst, oncocytic cyst, branchial cleft cyst, and epidermoid cyst.
Lipoma: Overall, lipomas are the most common mesenchymal benign neoplasms, and typically present in the 5th-7th Clinically, they are slow growing tumors with symptoms related to mass effect. About 13% of them occur in the head and neck, most commonly in the posterior neck. Rarely, lipomas can occur in the anterior...
Conclusion
By routinely searching for and piecing together the imaging and clinical characteristics of these lesions we can more objectively evaluate neck disease and report appropriately, making a diagnosis or, perhaps more importantly, provide answers to the specific questions of the clinician that will help in the evaluation of the lesion and/or treatment of the patient.
