Background
Given the increasing number of ultrasound scans that we perform in musculoskeletal radiology and the possibility of symptomatic relief by minimal invasive treatment we will propose a number of the most frequent affection,
that can be seen on US and properly treated on site using US guidance.
Among the procedures that can be performed under ultrasonographic guidance we can include: biopsies; abscesses,
bursitis,
hematomas or muscle tears drainage; treatment of cystic lesions; diagnostic or therapeutic arthrocentesis; injection of substances into joints or lesions.
Although some of these procedures are often carried out without imaging guidance,
its use improves their efficacy.
Drainages can be performed with catheters or needles and makes it possible to avoid more aggressive treatments in most cases.
Urokinase is useful for draining hematomas or fibrinous collections.
Injecting corticoids is useful in the treatment of synovial cysts,
Baker’s cyst and tendinitis.
