TheIstituto Superiore di Sanità (National Institute of Health,
(ISS)) hasa consultant role in safeguarding Public Health in the production and use of radiation in diagnosis and therapy.
Currentlegislation EURATOM 13/59 (1)emphasizes the need to implement Quality Programmes andtodraw upappropriate guidelines by scientific societies or experts to ensure good clinical practice in Radiological Sciences (nuclear medicine,
radiodiagnostics,
interventional radiology,
teleradiology,radiotherapy).
In addition,
request to measure hospital performances,
in order to improve health service quality,

Matherial and Methods
Starting from 1995 Interdisciplinary Working Groups (WGs)on Quality Assurance in radiotherapy and nuclear medicinehave beenconstituted and coordinated by ISS.
Later,
similar activities on radiodiagnostics,
teleradiology,
interventional radiology,were carried out jointly with INAIL,
by involvingall professionals delegated by National Scientific Societiesto analyze and face criticities to provide national guidelines.WGs promoted education and training byorganizing courses and debatesonthe main critical topics in the framework of Continuous QualityImprovement.

Golden rules for patient and worker radiation protection in IR
In the Report ISTISAN 15/41 a list of Golden Rules for radiation protection of patient and worker respectively has been defined.
A selection of the mainrules are reported in Figg.
4 and 5.
