Background/Introduction
Radiation exposure in oncologic patients has significantly increased during the last years.
This is due to several factors,
the use of new drugs that require more frequent monitoring with radiologic imaging and the greater survival of patients with consequent extension of follow-up.
As a consequence,
reasonable dose management has become more and more important.
The current Italian law on radiation protection forces continuous assessment of patient’s dose and development of programs to improve diagnostic exams,
especially for computed tomography.
The 2013/59 Euratom directive strengthens this...
Description of activity and work performed
The scanner used for all examinations has been a GE LightSpeed 64 slice and the iterative reconstruction technique was adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR).
The area of coverage comprised thorax,
abdomen and pelvis,
unenhanced and/or enhanced scan using 1mL/Kgbw isoosmolar iodinated contrast agent at 2.5-3.0 mL/s flow rate (automated injector).
We have managed to scan 24 consecutive patients with follow-up CT examinations for oncologic diseases by using a lower radiation dose protocol (adapted from University of Wisconsin) changing parametres as shown in Table 1.
We...
Conclusion and Recommendations
We have studied 24 consecutive patients with follow up CT examination for oncologic diseas by using a lower radiation dose protocol.
The current studies were compared with previous CT examination scanned with a standard low dose procol with adaptative statistical interactive recostruction (ASIR).
Every CT exam was evaluated by two experienced radiologist that performed a qualitative assessment of the images.
In abdomen and pelvis studies we detected a relative greater image noise in liver parenchyma,
but we have found that in lung and mediastinum there...
