Background/Introduction
With the Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM (Basic Safety Standards Directive,
BSS) some new and some modifications of recommendations have been issued that directly influence the workflow of diagnostic imaging [1].
The changes will mainly affect the indications for imaging (the justification) and the optimisation of the investigation (Table 1),
thus bearing considerable impact on the radiologist’s and the nuclear specialist’s work [2].
Indication and investigation are,
in a summarized form,
regarded as the first two parts of the radiology report [3,

Description of activity and work performed
A referral sheet was developed as part of a structured reporting template that contained all relevant and updated items of the BSS Directive.
In the same way a structured investigation scheme was developed.
For the indication section of the structured reporting template,
a simple structure of 3 groups of fields was developed fulfilling all requirements of the BSS Directive and other diagnostic concepts (Fig.
1).
Content with relevance for radiation protection is compiled in the form of attributes (e.

Conclusion and Recommendations
With the structured indication and the structured investigation schemes as parts of a holistic structured reporting template the requirements of the BSS Directive may be brought to the point of care in clinical radiology.
Optimization as one of the important principles of radiation protection is defined in the BSS Directive as to “… be consistent with the medical purpose of the exposure” and this term is used in the context of clinical responsibility and of clinical evaluation of the outcome [1].
Therefore it may be...
