Background/introduction

EFOMP The European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) was founded in May 1980 to serve as an umbrella organisation to all national medical physics societies in Europe. There are 7500 medical physicists of 35 national Medical Physics organisations represented by EFOMP . (fig.1) COUNCIL DIRECTIVE 2013/59/EURATOM laying down basic safety standards for protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiation, and repealing Directives 89/618/Euratom, 90/641/Euratom, 96/29/Euratom, 97/43/Euratom and 2003/122/Euratom was published on 5 December 2013. Description of activity and work performed

Due to the forthcoming implementation of the Directive, EFOMP is working on several initiatives to promote this trasposition at national level, through: - Statements - Research projects A specific EFOMP working group prepared statement relating to Article 60 (fig.3) of “COUNCIL DIRECTIVE 2013/59/EURATOM of 5 December 2013 “ The aim of EFOMP’s document is to clarify the position on article 60.3 (c-f) (fig.4) of the EU BSS Directive regarding optimization processes. Conclusion and recommendations

EFOMP proposes that the relevant parameters of Table 1 for assessing the patient dose must be displayed to the operator/practitioner before (i.e. for CT), during (i.e. for interventional radiology) and at the end of the procedure (i.e. for interventional radiology and CT). Then they must be transferred to the record of the examination with no modification, together with the the reference distance of the measurements of the relevant parameters.
