Background/introduction
In the United Kingdom,
trauma kills approximately 16,000 people per year1 and is the leading cause of death in those aged under 40.2
NHS choice defines major trauma as multiple,
serious injuries that could result in disability or death.
Seriously injured patients (SIPs) describe patients who have suffered from a major trauma (multiple traumatic injuries).
This is measured on a scale known as the Injury Severity Score (ISS) which scores injuries from 1 to 75,

Standards
The standards are taken from Royal College of Radiology,
Standards of practice and guidance for trauma radiology in the severly injured patients 9.

100% compliance with all standards.
This is the expectation for all departments whether MTC or TU.
Methods
The RCR sent a survey to all Radiology Departments in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland in a hospital with an Emergency Department.
The audit was divided into 2 sections:

Conclusion and recommendations
Formalised Major Trauma Networks (MTN) are a relatively new service configuration in England and Wales and are still being formalised in Scotland and Norther Ireland.
Currently we are not meeting the standards set out by the RCR guidelines.
This is for a combination of infrastructure and human factors.
Our recommendations are for changes that do not require major building or service changes and should therefore,
be possible to implement.
The configuration and services available in departments does not meet the standards.
