Background/introduction

The new Basic Safety Standards (BSS) Directive (Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom) came into force on February 6, 2018. It modernises European radiation protection legislation by taking account of the latest scientific knowledge, technological progress, and operational experience with current legislation. As the transposition of the BSS Directive in the medical sector (BSS MED) constituted a major challenge for national legislators and regulators in European Union Member States, the European Commission launched a 15-month tender project in May 2016 to monitor the transposition of the BSS MED...

Description of activity and work performed

The tender project was awarded to a consortium of three European umbrella organisations namely: the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP), the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS). The objectives of the contract were to: Facilitate the detection of issues; Exchange first experiences and resolutions; Identify good practices with the transposition of the new directive in the medical sector. Conclusion and recommendations

The strength of this study was based on the high level of responses by the countries surveyed and the positive contributions received during the workshop held in Brussels, Belgium, in January 2017. The majority of countries perceived the difficulty/effort in the transposition of the majority of the topics surveyed to be predominantly Low. However, some sub-topics/articles were rated mainly Medium/High and raised some specific concerns.
