Background/introduction
The European Alliance for Medical Radiation Protection Research (EURAMED) was established by five medical associations involved in the application of ionising radiation in medicine,
namely the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM),
the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP),
the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS),
the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) with the goal of jointly improving medical care and its medical radiation protection issues through sustainable research efforts.
Since October 1st,
2017...
Description of activity and work performed
Activities undertaken between Nov 2015 and September 2017:
Development and publication of the 1st edition of the common strategic research agenda for radiation protection in medicine in the Insights into Imaging journal;
Engagement with other stakeholders in radiation protection research;
Strategic guidance of MEDIRAD project application (“Implications of medical low dose radiation exposure”,
http://medirad-project.eu/): an EU funded 10 Mio EUR project dealing with low-dose radiation effects in medical applications that started in June 2017;
Official launch of EURAMED platform at the Oxford radiation protection week...
Conclusion and recommendations
EURAMED strives to promote a holistic view of medical radiation protection research needs in Europe with the aim to coordinate the research strategies through interaction with the other platforms.
In order to become sustainable as a non-profit society,
EURAMED will need a strong membership representing Europe’s leading university hospitals,
academic centres and research institutions in the field.
Communication and dissemination activities are crucial in this initial phase in order to ensure visibility and uptake of proposed research strategies.
