Background/introduction
ESR iGuide is the European Society of Radiology’s solution to make imaging referral guidelines readily available and easily usable everywhere in Europe.
Developed through an evidence-based methodology,
the ESR’s guidelines will set a common standard for Europe.
Through embedding these guidelines in the clinical decision support (CDS) platform ESR iGuide,
users will be able to localise the recommendations according to their needs starting from the evidence-based core.
ESR iGuide is designed to be a user-friendly system available to referring physicians at the point of care....
Description of activity and work performed
ESR iGuide pilot tests started in Europe in 2016,
and ESR iGuide was implemented in hospitals across Europe and the Middle East throughout 2017,
with seven sites live as of the fourth quarter of 2017.
Projects in Croatia and Sweden concluded in 2017.
The implementation of ESR iGuide is a project of usually three to five months' duration,
comprising the following phases:
Phase 0: Preparatory phase and scope definition
Phase 1: Procedure mapping preparation,
system build,
testing
Phase 2: Mapping organisational procedures to ESR iGuide...
Conclusion and recommendations
The introduction of clinical decision support for medical imaging in Europe is a significant development in the practice of radiology and in the cooperation between referring physicians and radiologists.
It is part of wider trends towards embedding evidence-based medicine in order to improve patient safety,
quality of care and health outcomes.
Through its Working Group on Imaging Referral Guidelines,
the ESR is working to ensure that up-to-date criteria for appropriate referrals are available to physicians in Europe.
