Background/introduction
Acquisition of competences while young,
through formal academic training programmes should have a life-long impact. Action “four” of the Bonn Call for Action is to ‘strengthen radiation protection education (RPE) and training..,’.
Introduction of radiation protection (RP) principals and practices to students while undertaking formal medical and health courses in universities and colleges may be the best way of inculcating a life-long radiation-safety culture in Africa.
This strategic intervention produces a set of health workers who right from the beginning of their profession and carrier appreciate,
practice and pass on to their peers and to subsquent generations a culture of RP safety and quality.
The question is whether African Academic Institutions (AAI) have the readiness to graduate imaging personnel with adequate radiation protection (RP) knowledge,
mind-set and practice-culture for a radiation-safe work environment.
This survey was to establish RPE capacity in AAI.
