Background/introduction
AIM
To determine the blood antioxidant-oxidant status of different hospital staff groups exposed to low-doses of ionizing radiation and control subjects and to evaluate the association between dietary total antioxidant capacity and antioxidant-oxidant status.
INTRODUCTION
Human exposure to ionizing radiation leads to oxidizing events through both direct and indirect effect.
Specifically,
the indirect effect originates highly reactive species able to disrupt the natural antioxidant-oxidant balance (redox imbalance),
resulting into an oxidative stress condition.
Oxidative stress can lead to pathological changes,
which are of particular concern...
Description of activity and work performed
MATERIAL AND METHODS
· This study was conducted on 14 workers from the Interventional Radiology and Cardiology Unit (group 1),
17 workers from Radiation Oncology Unit (group 2),
10 workers from Nuclear Medicine Unit (group 3) and 18 workers non-exposed to low-doses of ionizing radiation (controls) (Table 1).
· Plasma levels of antioxidant markers (total antioxidant capacity,
extracellular superoxide dismutase activity,
and GSH/GSSG ratio) and oxidative stress markers (nitrites and nitrates,
and lipid peroxidation) were measured by different biochemical methods in all four groups (Fig....
Conclusion and recommendations
These results suggest that occupational exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation,
without appropriate countermeasures,
can lead to an imbalanced redox status.
