Background/introduction
AIM: The purpose of this study was to jointly analyze image quality and dosimetry in digital mammography by introducing a figure of merit,
non-based on the contrast-noise relation.
INTRODUCTION:
Breast cancer is the most frequent among Spanish women and a disease with high impact worldwide.
The screening procedure must provide:
- Enough Image quality to allow the identification and assessment of masses,
tumors and micro calcifications,
without artifacts or the distortion of the breast anatomy.
- Dose delivered must be As Low As Reasonable Achievable...
Description of activity and work performed
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
8 mammography systems were analyzed during 2016 y 2017: Giotto I3DL (3units),
Fujifilm Amulet FDR (3 units) and Hologic Selenia (2 units).
According to the Spanish protocol of quality assurance in radiodiagnostic (PECCRD)(1) ,
the image quality is evaluated with 6 different tests.
In this study we focus on the following tests since we consider them relievable to assess image quality and dosimetry:
-Image quality: Contrast thickness threshold The phantom CDMAM 3.4 was used in this test.
This phantom contains gold discs...
Conclusion and recommendations
Several figures of merti have been published.
Most of them used the CNR as indicator of image quality.
Among them,
we outline the most commonly used,
Fm = CNR2/DG.
Table 3 showes the assessment of both figures of merit for each system analyzed.
The evaluation of both figures of merit is not consistent:
- CNR could yield within a range for the same mammograph
- CNR could be obtained following different methodologies making the direct comparison difficult.
- Fm could give a better assessment to...
