Purpose or learning objective
The ideal radiographic technique to perform an exam with diagnostic quality requires the appropriate choice of the combination between radiation dose and quality of the diagnostic image. The definition of the best combination can be obtained with the use of additional filters in the radiation beam with a specific tube tension to reduce the radiation dose, and the adoption of tools for the quantitative assessment of image quality. The purpose of this project is to define the technical parameters used in the postero-anterior projection of...
Methods or background
The images were acquired with the addition of 10 cm PMMA thickness to CDRAD 2.0 test device with a tube voltage range between 96 and 133 kV, with and without additional filtration (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mm Cu) in a Siemens X-ray equipment, Multix Top model and a Carestream Radiographic Image Digitizer, model DRX-1. The tube current-time product was set to keep the image receptor response. The measurement of the Dose-Area Product (DAP) was performed with the PTW meter, Diamentor model. The image quality parameter...
Results or findings
Twenty eight filter/tube voltage combinations were performed. Only seven showed IQFinv values higher than routine protocol (4.71). DAP decreased with increased tension and with the use of additional filtration. The increase in the dose produced higher image quality . The IQFinv reduced with increasing voltage, with no change when the filter was selected. The higher FOM was observed for 0.2 mm Cu and 102 kV (4.38). Compared to the clinical routine protocol, the best FOM combination found showed 45.03% DAP reduction and 4.27% IQFinv increase....
Conclusion
Filtration has a strong influence on the reduction of the dose. It is possible to decrease the dose to patient for as much as maintain or increase the quality of the image. Further parameters must be evaluated before any change techniques. We didn't evaluate the minimum achievable IQFinv for PA chest examination, despite we determined the clinical exam routine value. To obtain a complete study for the chest exam, the lateral view should be evaluated.
