Purpose or learning objective
Following the transposition of EURATOM 59/2013 to Spanish law in 2019 (RD601/2019) our Regional Health Care System in Asturias, SESPA, a region located in the north of Spain, acquired a radiation dose management software (Radimetrics. Bayer) to help in the organization and coordination of activities performed to review and optimize radiation doses to ensure patient´s safety.
Our region, with 1.022.800 million populations has 8 health areas and 12 public hospitals with radiology and nuclear medicine facilities. The media of annual radiological examinations is around 700.000....
Methods or background
The dose management platform, Radimetrics, gives complete information about radiation doses in radiological examinations: volume CT dose index (CTDI vol), dose length product( DLP), effective dose, size specific dose estimate (SSDS) and absorbed dose. Radimetrics obtains patient demographic and exposure information directly from PACS where it is stored in the DICOM header or Radiation Dose Structured Report.
The platform gives access to individual dose values but also to large-scale overview of dose values for different protocols and cumulative patient doses. There is full interconnectivity among...
Results or findings
Since march 2020 the regional Radiation Dose Committee has been implementing the following strategies for radiation exposure management and reduction:
-Training and empowering the dose management team and all staff related to radiation dose in the region:
There has been a dedicated training of four weeks by the providers of the platform through 2020 and 2021, with different levels of education for the different stakeholders (Regional Dose Committee members, subcommittees of different hospitals, radiologists and technicians and all staff related to radiation).
-Members of the...
Conclusion
-The acquisition of a software for radiation dose management in our region is helping us to monitor and track patients radiation dose and, by analysing large amount of dose data, to identify the average doses of the most frequently performed protocols and detect wrong tendencies to be corrected, as well as to establish strategies for dose optimization and reduction.
-The constitution of a Radiation Dose Committee is mandatory to guide the staff involved in radiation dose management in the implementation of protocols and strategies for...
