Purpose or learning objective
Parkinson’s disease (PD) shares the overlapping clinical symptoms with essential tremor (ET)1 and multiple system atrophy (MSA)2, but they have distinct pathophysiology, therefore, which means the different therapy. There are still some challenges to diagnose PD, ET and MSA precisely. An increasing number of studies have substantiated that based on R2* values in the putamen MSA subtypes might be differentiated form PD3, additionally, the neuromelanin-sensitive MRI techniques can discriminate ET from PD4. But less research to investigate the cerebellar dentate nuclei (DN) changes in the...
Methods or background
Ten patients with PD (6 women and 4 men; mean age, 62.1±8.7 years), 10 patients with ET (6 women and 4 men; mean age, 63.6±8.7 years), 9 patients with MSA (6 women and 3 men; mean age, 63.3±6.9 years), and 10 age-and gender-matched healthy controls (6 women and 4 men; mean age, 61.2±6.0 years) were included in the study. All subjects were scanned on a 3T Philips MRI system using 3D multi-echo strategically acquired gradient echo (STAGE) imaging6. The imaging parameters were: an in-plane resolution...
Results or findings
There were no differences in the DN volume between 4 groups. The QSM values of DN in the MSA were higher than the others three groups (p<.000), and the DN QSM values in patients with PD and ET showed no difference with HCs (Figure 1).
Conclusion
We investigated the DN volume and QSM values in Parkinson's and related diseases and age- and sex-matched HCs and found the abnormal iron accumulation in the DN of MSA patients. The result was consistent with a recent study focused on the MSA-cerebellar type (MSA-C) which stated the QSM values in the DN were significantly higher in MSA-C than those in HC groups (p < .001) and were correlated with disease duration in MSA-C7. In conclusion, the QSM values of the DN could be a promising...
