Purpose or learning objective
This study aims to evaluate the awareness of radiation exposure amongst medical students on clinical rotation in a district general hospital.
This study also aims to assess the beneficial impact of a radiation exposure lecture on medical students’ knowledge of radiation exposure.
Methods or background
The UK Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 outlines the requirements for junior doctors, who are often the main requesters of a wide variety of medical imagings, to be aware of the estimated radiation doses of the commonly requested investigations. As future junior doctors, medical students in their clinical years should be equipped with the knowledge of radiation exposure and protection. A pre-teaching survey was distributed to 24 medical students to test their knowledge of radiation exposure, and their perceived importance of and self-confidence in...
Results or findings
The questionnaire response rate is 75%
There is a significant increase in the proportion of respondents with correct answers after the teaching session (P-value <0.05, audit standard met in 60% of the questions post-teaching) (as shown in figure 1)
72.2% of the students who completed the questionnaire were at least moderately confident in their knowledge of radiation exposure (vs. 0% pre-teaching)
89.5% of the students who completed the questionnaire considered relevant knowledge to be at least moderately important (vs. 83.3% pre-teaching)
There is a 188%...
Conclusion
There is a knowledge gap in radiation exposure amongst medical students
It could be very beneficial to incorporate teaching sessions on radiation exposure, protection, and relevant legislation into medical school curriculum in order to improve and maintain medical students' knowledge of these subjects
However, there are limitations of the study, which include a sub-optimal questionnaire response rate, which is 75%, and a small sample size, which is 18 students in total.
