Purpose or learning objective
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assists Member States in nuclear sciences and applications to benefit human health and to ensure safe, quality and effective medical uses of radiation.
The overall goal of the IAEA Human Health programme is to build capacity and transfer technology for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in radiation medicine according to best practices. Furthermore, the IAEA has a statutory responsibility to assist in the application of safety standards in its Member States, including medical exposure.
Methods or background
The EuroSafe Imaging Call for Action 2018 is aligned with the IAEA programme for radiation protection in medicine established in 2002 [1] and guided by the Bonn Call for Action issued by the IAEA jointly with the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2012 [2]. IAEA support to the Member States for the 10 actions to improve radiation protection in medicine (Figure 1) is provided through:
Developing safety standards and guidance and supporting the implementation of these;
Developing training resources and providing training;
Giving technical assistance;...
Results or findings
Requirements relevant to the fundamental safety objectives and principles of protection and safety are published in the IAEA Safety Standards Series No. GSR Part 3, Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards [4]. Recommendations and guidance on fulfilling these requirements with respect to medical uses of ionizing radiation are provided in the Specific Safety Guide on Radiation Protection and Safety in Medical Uses of Ionizing Radiation SSG-46, jointly sponsored by the IAEA and the International Labour Office, the Pan American Health...
Conclusion
The IAEA continues to support medical physics and radiation protection in medical imaging through coordinated research, training material, and guidance on standardization and harmonization in QA , dosimetry and implementation of safety standards.
