Purpose or learning objective
Fluoroscopic guided hip injections (FGHIs) are commonly performed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. As such procedures would involve exposure to ionising radiation, it is important to minimise the radiation exposure to patients. This audit aims to review the radiation exposure, specifically the dose area product (DAP) and the screening time (ST), of the fluoroscopic guided hip injections performed at Airedale General Hospital (AGH), as part of a continuous audit process.
Methods or background
A retrospective study has been done to review the fluoroscopic guided hip injections performed at AGH between July 2019 and August 2021. The mean dose area product (microGy.m2) and the mean screening time (seconds) were extracted and compared with the results from two previous audit cycles (2016/2017 and 2017/2018). Since there are no national FGHI-specific DAP and ST standards, the UK National Diagnostic Reference Levels (NDRLs) for hip arthrography have been referenced, with the mean dose area product of 140 microGy.m2 and the screening time...
Results or findings
There were 119 cases of fluoroscopic guided hip injections reviewed in this audit cycle (2019-2021)
The mean dose area product (DAP) obtained from this audit cycle is 1.5 microGy.m2, which is 98.93% less than the National Diagnostic Reference Level (140 microGy.m2)
The mean screening time (ST) obtained from this audit cycle is 1 second, which is 98.18% less than the National Diagnostic Reference Level (55 seconds)
100% of the cases reviewed in this audit cycle have the DAP and the ST below the National Diagnostic...
Conclusion
The mean dose area product (DAP) of this audit cycle is lower than that of the 2016/2017 audit cycle, and it showed no significant change from the 2017/2018 audit cycle (as shown in figure 1)
The mean screening time (ST) in this audit cycle is lower than that of the 2016/2017 audit cycle, and it remains unchanged when compared with the 2017/2018 audit results (as shown in figure 2)
The results obtained at AGH, including both the mean DAP and the mean ST, are significantly...
