Purpose or learning objective
WHO has expressed concern about the increase in requests for exams with ionizing radiation in recent years, determining actions with in order to strengthen the principles of radiological protection.
In Brazil, Brazilian College of Radiology emphasizes the need to justify the performance of the examsradiological examinations to avoid unnecessary exposure.
Communication of the risks of exposure to ionizing radiation is an important strategy in raising awareness about the deleterious effects and patient care.
The purpose of this project is, through activity virtual education, disseminate and...
Methods or background
Were applied, during the pedagogical activities and the Radiology League, questionnaires pre andonline interactive post-classroom for first-year medical students at a Faculty of Private medicine in the years 2021 and 2022
The content addressed protection principles radiology, recommendations of the American College of Radiology and the Choosing Wisely. Qualitative analysis were performed
Results or findings
73 responses were obtained
More than half (84.9%) of the target public considers that, currently, there is an excess of exam requestswith emission of ionizing radiation
Regarding the reasons for this practice, pressure from patients to request additional tests (52.1%) and the practice of defensive medicine (42.5%) were pointed out as the main associated factors
Another important factor associated with this context is the unavailability of previous tests performed by patients
98.6% see the creation of a universal medical record as a potential reducer for...
Conclusion
The results obtained corroborate the WHO recommendation to strengthen education on Radiological Protection, promoting greater safety to patients.
In addition to recognizing the importance of the topic, it is necessary to invest in its curricular inclusion in medical training, in addition to encouraging from during this period, training on justification, optimization and dose limitation individual, as well as the communication of these elements in the doctor x patient.
New projects with other undergraduate students must be applied to strengthen knowledge on this topic
