Learning Objectives
To describe a series of cases of antenatally detected choroidal fissure cysts imaged with MRI pre- and post-natally in order to illustrate the spectrum of appearances and the clinical outcomes in this new patient group.
Background
Choroidal fissure cysts (CFCs) have been infrequently reported in the literature and,
when described,
are usually considered to be incidental findings of no clinical significance.[1,2]
A CFC refers to an intracranial cyst occurring at the level of the choroidal fissure. The choroidal fissure is the narrow cleft along the medial wall of the lateral ventricle to which the choroid plexus is attached; it lies between the upper surface of the thalamus and lateral edge of the fornix in the central part of the ventricle and...
Imaging Findings OR Procedure Details
METHOD
We performed a search on our database for all fetal MRIs performed over a 5 year period with mention of a CFC in the report.
All of these cases had been referred for MRI following detection of an intracranial cyst on the mid-trimester obstetric ultrasound.
We then retrospectively reviewed the antenatal and postnatal imaging of the patients (where available) along with their clinical records to determine clinical outcome.
RESULTS
Five cases with pre and post natal MRI imaging were identified with a further sixth...
Conclusion
Our case series indicates that choroidal fissure cysts identified in the fetus cannot be disregarded as incidental findings.
They tend to be larger than those seen in older individuals,
and are often associated with other structural brain anomalies and neurological morbidity.
With the increasing uptake of fetal MRI,
it is likely that they will be more frequently recognized.
At present there is little published which addresses the postnatal outcome of these patients and a standardized approach to postnatal management [3].
As such,
care should be...
