Learning objectives
Current medical school cohorts are made up of approximately 50% males to females (1). Despite this, the Clinical Radiology trainee demographics from the last 5 years remain predominantly male dominated (2).
Clinical Radiology is academically challenging, offers a wide range of subspecialty options and achievable work hours for a good work life balance, meaning it caters to a wide range of personalities and priorities.
The main aims of the project are as follows:
Identify reasons for this gender gap
are these modifiable?
Identify reasons why...
Background
Prospective multi-center study using a voluntary, anonymous questionnaire aimed at final year medical students, first and second year junior doctors, Registrars and current Radiology Trainees.
Imaging findings OR Procedure details
A total of 318 people responded to the audit (197 women, 114 men). The vast majority of these were medical students of various levels of experience (38%).
[Fig 1]
There was more than double the proportion of men to women who responded they were considering Radiology as a potential career, suggesting the gender gap is likely to continue into future generations.
[Fig 2]
[Fig 3]
The impression of Radiology being “too technology heavy" iss statistically significant between males and females (p<0.05).
The next biggest differences...
Conclusion
The reasons for the current gender differences in Clinical Radiology are multifactorial. This study has revealed differences in reasons for not pursuing Radiology between men and women in medical students and junior doctors.
[Fig 4]
In addition, a universal opinion from the study is there is a lack of exposure and Radiology mentorship in medical school provoking a lack of interest as a viable career option.
[Fig 5]
A proposed solution to address these, may be to offer more junior doctor and medical student rotations...
