Aims and objectives
Chondrolysis of the hip is characterised by rapidly progressive destruction of the articular cartilage of the femoral head and acetabulum with resultant joint space narrowing and restricted movement.
The causes of Chondrolysis in children include 1.Slipped capital femoral epiphysis 2.Severe trauma 3.Prolonged immobilisation 4.Infective arthritis 5.Juvenile idiopathic arthritis 6.Perthes disease & 7.Idiopathic Chondrolysis of Hip.
Idiopathic Chondrolysis of Hip is a rare pediatric musculoskeletal disorder usually affecting females .The usual presentation includes painful,
stiff hip of unknown etiology.

Methods and materials
A total of 14 cases were studied over a period of 5 years from 2010 to 2018.
They were children in the adolescent or pre adolescent age group,
from 9 to 12 years of age who presented with complaints of hip pain and limp.
All these children were imaged with 1.5T MRI
The MR sequences protocol used were,
coronal fat suppressed fast spin-echo T2 weighted sequence (TR /TE ,3300 ms/ 31 ms: echo-train length or turbo factor,
8; matrix 320 x 320; slice thickness,
3mm;...
Results
The findings obtained were grouped under three stages on the radiological progression of appearances.
STAGE I
Variable Radiographic joint space narrowing,
Wedge shaped focal area of T2 hyper/ T1 hypointensity ( Characterstic and Earliest finding in MRI) centered in the middle one third of the femoral head in coronal images
±Synovial hypertrophy and joint effusion.
STAGE II
Superomedial Acetabular edema along the triradiate cartilage in the affected hip in addition to the Stage I findings.
Protrusio acetabuli may be seen
± Synovial hypertrophy and joint...
Conclusion
Radiologists should be aware of the various radiological findings of Idiopathic Chondrolysis of Hip,
including the condition’s different stages.
In the early stages,
the destruction proved to be reversible with conservative treatment
Early detection and treatment of Idiopathic Chondrolysis of Hip are imperative because they may prevent catastrophic joint destruction.
