Learning objectives
To review the normal postoperative MDTC findings according to the surgery procedure as well as the early and late postoperative complications including tumor recurrence.
These data will be collected from patients of our hospital that underwent pancreatic surgery during the last four years.
Background
1.- Description of the main types of surgical pancreatic procedures: resection (Whipple procedure,
distal and total pancreatectomy) and drainage (Frey procedure),
including normal postoperative MDCT findings.
2.- Description of the principal early complications: abscess,
collections,
intraabdominal hemorrhage,
retroperitoneal hematoma,
splenic infarction,
anastomotic leaks,
veins thrombosis,
pseudoaneurysm rupture.
3.- Description of the principal late complications including tumor recurrence:
hepatic steatosis,
fat necrosis,
dilatation of the main pancreatic duct,
stricture in the pancreaticojejunostomy,
dilatation of the biliary tract,
intestinal obstruction,
incisional hernia.
Findings and procedure details
Pancreatic surgical procedures can be classified as either resection or drainage procedures.
1.-PANCREATIC SURGICAL PROCEDURES:
Pancreatic resection,
mostly performed to remove pancreatic tumors,
provides the only option leading to long-term survival or even to cure in pancreatic neoplasms.
The resection procedures registered in our hospital in the las four years include:
Pancreatoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure)
Central pancreatectomy.
Distal pancreatectomy.
Total pancreatectomy.
2.- DRAINAGE PROCEDURE:
There is another group of procedures which are usually performed to treat chronic pancreatitis,
also named drainage procedure,
and include the Puestow...
Conclusion
Pancreatic surgical procedures can be classified as resection or drainage procedure.
Radiologists have to become familiarized with the different procedures,
identify the normal postoperative findings according to the procedure as well as early and late complications including tumor recurrence.
According to our experience and to the data collected over the past four years in our hospital,
the most common complications include pancreatic fistula,
anastomotic leaks and peripancreatic transient fluid collections.
Knowledge of this acute and late complications and the normal postoperative findings,
is crucial for...
