Learning objectives
Illustrate the complex anatomy of the hippocampus and the MR acquisition techniques.
Describe various conditions and their specific imaging features on MRI helpful in diagnosis and categorisation of all hippocampal pathologies from congenital to neoplastic.
Background
Hippocampus is a complex structure and forms a part of limbic system,
critical to human memory,
emotions and behaviour.
Bilateral hippocampal lesions result in amnesia.
The advent of surgical procedures that can cure medically intractable seizures by excision of hippocampal abnormalities has spurred extensive research directed toward MR analysis of this region.
Our purpose is to introduce the reader to these techniques.
This paper is divided into three parts: normal hippocampal anatomy,
MR imaging techniques and lesions affecting the hippocampus.
We present a collection of...
Findings and procedure details
MR TECHNIQUE:
Most patients were scanned on a 3.0 T MRI system using a head matrix coil,
while a few cases were performed on a 1.5 T MRI system using a head sense coil.
The following sequences were acquired:
T2 AXIAL AND CORONAL/ T1 AXIAL/ T1MPRAGE/ T1 IR/ SWI/ T2 CORONAL/ FLAIR AXIAL routine imaging.
Additional sequences are:
T1 MPRAGE sequence was acquired in sagittal plane with a slice thickness (ST) of 0.95 mm,
and reconstructed in all three (axial,
coronal and sagittal) planes.
Coronal...
Conclusion
Conclusion
MR imaging show cases a detailed anatomy of the hippocampus.
MR is the gold standard in delineating and categorising various pathologies affecting the hippocampus in the proper clinical setting.
