Learning objectives
· Review acute pancreatitis imaging features on CT.
· Review the local complications.
Background
· Acute pancreatitis is a inflammatory process involving the pancreas with a range of severity and various local and systemic complications.
· The role of imaging is limited during the early phase because early morphologic changes do not correlate with the clinical findings.
· Imaging is important in the late phase for diagnosing and evaluating the evolution of necrotizing pancreatitis and its complications and for monitoring treatment response.
Findings and procedure details
Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory condition,
with a range of severity as well as various local and systemic complications.
Gallstones and alcohol are the first and second most common causes.
The revised Atlanta classification requires that two or more of the following criteria be met for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis:
abdominal pain suggestive of pancreatitis,
serum amylase or lipase level greater than three times the upper normal value,
characteristic imaging findings.

Conclusion
Imaging findings combined with the time course of the disease allow clear differentiation between the type of collections and enable the decision of treatment.
