Learning objectives
The aim of this work is to describe the main epidemiological, clinical and radiological features of the mesenteric and peritoneal masses, including primary and secondary mesenteric neoplasms, as well as infectious and inflammatory conditions.
Determine the important aspects that allow us to establish the differential diagnosis of these pathological processes.
Background
There is a wide differential diagnosis for the masses that arise in the mesentery and peritoneum, including: metastatic implants, primary neoplasms(both benign and malignant) and inflammatory-infectious conditions.
Findings and procedure details
Primary Peritoneal Tumors.
They are defined as tumors whose primary manifestation is peritoneal, in the absence of a visceral origin. They arise from the mesothelial cells and the structuresofthe subperitoneum tissue.
1.- Mesothelial tumors.
Peritoneal malignant mesothelioma.
It is a rare tumor (1-2 cases per million), very aggressive, derived from the peritoneal mesothelium. 20-30% of mesotheliomas affect only the peritoneum (without thoracic involvement).
They usually occur in men 50 - 70 years. There is an association with asbestos exposure.

Conclusion
The mesenteric and peritoneal masses constitute a broad differential diagnosis, which often has a different prognosis and treatment.
In addition to the radiological characteristics, it is necessary to know the demographic and phystopathological characteristics of the processes that affect the mesentery and peritoneum, as well as to have an adequate medical history and laboratory data to help us form and focus our differential diagnosis.
Percutaneous imaging-guided biopsy of peritoneal masses is often required, and is a safe and effective procedure.
