Learning objectives
Learnthe main indications of ultrasound in the evaluation of central catheters.
Illustrate with images of our Institution, usual and unusual ultrasound findings in the evaluation of central catheters.
Identify the advantages and disadvantages in relation to other diagnostic methods.
Background
Patients in critical condition or with some need for prolonged venous accesses sometimes need a central venous catheter to aid diagnosis and treatment.
In emergency rooms and intensive care units, the use of vascular catheters is common. In general, placement is usually performed under “blind” anatomical references and the position evaluation is performed by radiography.
It is for this reason that Radiologists and Pediatricians should be able to recognize the wrong positioning of the catheter and the detection of possible serious complications such as: abnormal...
Findings and procedure details
The ultrasound guide allows direct visualization of the vessels of interest and surrounding anatomical structures. It also allows to choose the best "target vessel", determine its depth and the optimal place to approach the puncture(3). This technique improves the safety of the procedure and reduces involuntary injuries. (Fig. 1)
ADVANTAGES OF EMPLOYMENT OF ECOGRAPHY IN THE PLACEMENT OF CENTRAL CATHETERS
If we add to that, its low cost, reproducibility and availability, the importance of the use employment is multiplied.

Conclusion
In properly prepared and experienced hands, vascular access by ultrasound guidance reduces the frequency of procedural failures and associated complications and facilitates channeling on the first attempt.
The knowledge and active search for complications make ultrasound an excellent diagnostic method for radiologists, pediatricians and neonatologists, preserving radiological safety in the pediatric population.
