Areview of calcaneal lesions with an aimto provide an algorithm to facilitate the radiological diagnosis of tumour and tumour-like lesions of the calcaneus
Background
Using a database of cases from a tertiary orthopaedic oncology referral centre a search for calcaneal lesions revealed 174 cases.
Of these 174 cases only 66 proved to be true calcaneal lesions.
Cases before 2007 were excluded since the images were not available.
The demographics,
imaging features and radiographic diagnosis of these calcaneal lesions were analysed.
Of the 66 true calcaneal lesions there were 28 females and 38 males in the patient cohort with an average age of 35.4 years (range 10-87 years).

Introduction
The calcaneus may be affected by acquired and congenital disorders.
Multiple pathologies may arise in the calcaneus and include traumatic,
infectious,
haematological,
neoplastic and other secondary disorders which affect the calcaneus indirectly.
In some cases,
the location of certain pathologies within the calcaneus and their radiographic may be diagnostic [1].
A review of 66 cases of tumour and tumour-like calcaneal lesions was performed together with a review of the literature in order to develop a diagnostic algorithm for the more commonly encountered calcaneal lesions....
Conclusion
Some calcaneal lesions tend to occur in specific locations within the calcaneus rendering this useful information when making a diagnosis of calcaneal lesions.
The diagnostic chart we have presented should act as an aide-memoire to radiologists faced with calcaneal lesions.
