Learning objectives
To describe the clinical features of fat-containing pathologies of the musculoskeletal system.
.
To provide a comprehensive pictorial review of fat-containing pathologies encountered by the musculoskeletal radiologist.
Background
Cross sectional imaging of the musculoskeletal system is regularly performed at our institution,
for a multitude of pathological conditions.
Imaging protocols are tailored according to the clinical presentations by a board-certified radiologist at the time of imaging.
A retrospective analysis of musculoskeletal CT and MRI scans was performed by 2 senior radiologists and patients detected with fat-containing pathologies were included in the study.
A selection of representative cases will be described in the exhibit to enhance understanding of the subject.
Imaging findings OR Procedure Details
FAT CONTAINING LESIONS OF THE BONES:
Intraosseous lipomas (Fig. 1) were first described in 1880.
The lesions typically affect patients in age from 5 to 85 years,
with the lesions frequently discovered in the 4th and 5th decades of life.
Intraosseous lipomas have been reported to occur in equal frequency in both genders.
Patients are generally asymptomatic.
And lesions are discovered incidentally.
Uncommonly pain may be the presenting feature and is thought to be due to microtrabecular fractures occurring after minor trauma in the weakened...
Conclusion
Fatty lesions in the musculoskeletal system are routinely encountered in clinical practice.
These lesions may be the cause or effect of the patient's suffering.
Accurate diagnosis of these pathologies is critical as it dictates further management techniques.
