Conclusion

Total lung involvement showed strongest correlation with percentage of predicted DLCO.
It is possible to grade the severity of IPF based on the TID scores, with a cut off value of six, to separate advanced and limited disease, with a sensitivity of 85% and specificity of 65%.
Emphysema was found to be a factor, which caused the FVC values not to decrease as expected for a restrictive disease like IPF. This shows that concurrent emphysema in IPF patients can lead to spurious interpretation and diagnosis when based only on pulmonary function tests.
